Potential Winter-Spring 2006 topics --human rights aspects

Peterborough Cathedral, England

Last updated: 25 June 2005

The winter & spring 2006 topics will come from the new list of 10 topics announced by the NFL in June 2005. The resolution with the highest votes will be reserved for the Nationals 2006 tournament. The 2nd highest vote-getter will be selected for Jan-Feb 2006, and the 3rd highest, for Mar-Apr 2006.

Here are the ten outlines I've prepared for the 2006 topic possibilities:

1. The US should accept the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court.

2. A just government should provide health care to its citizens.

3. Gender categorization ought to be deemphasized in schools.

4. The use of the states power of eminent domain is unjust.

5. A victims deliberate use of deadly force is a just response to repeated abuse.

6. School administrators are justified in exercising editorial control over secondary school publications for reasons other than legal liability.

7. Juveniles charged with violent crimes should be tried and punished as adults.

8. In matters of family planning, the autonomy of the adolescent should outweigh the competing interests of the parent/guardian.

9. Mandatory term limits for elected officials are antithetical to representative democracy.

10. In matters of collecting military intelligence, the ends justify the means.
