62nd session of the Commission on Human Rights, 2006

last revised: 25 March 2006

On 15 March 2006, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution creating the new Human Rights Council, to replace the existing Commission on Human Rights.

The 62nd and final session of the Commission on Human Rights was originally scheduled to be held in Geneva from March 13 to April 21 2006, but has been twice suspended for a week so that it is now scheduled to convene in Geneva on Monday afternoon, 27 March 2006.

By the terms of the General Assembly resolution, the Commission is to wrap up its final business in this final session, and will be formally abolished by a vote of the Economic and Social Council on 16 June 2006. Among important items of its present session are the extension of several special procedure mandates and election of thirteen members of the Sub-Commission.

This page will briefly chronicle those events at the 62nd session that bear on the mandates and agendas of other bodies, as well as issues discussed or decided at by the Commission relating to other UN reform activities.
