Day 13: The TNC Business Norms are adopted today by the Sub-Commission, 13 August 2003

The Sub-Commission devoted the entire day to voting on draft decisions and resolutions. Late in the afternoon the TNC Business Norms that David Weissbrodt and others had been working hard on for the last several years were adopted by the Sub-Commission. The final vote turned out to be a unanimous vote -- all members of the resolution voting yes AND indicating that they would like to be co-sponsors. This is an extremely valuable endorsement of the TNC Norms, as very few resolutions each year achieve this type of unanimity.

Almost immediately several NGOs, including Human Rights Watch, issued press releases welcoming the TNC Norms. David Weissbrodt was interviewed in the evening by CNBC Television. In addition he was asked to participate in a debate on BBC World Radio Service later in the evening, facing off against an offical of a US business organization in the U.S. Several of us heard the broadcast live as David was participating. We thought he did a great job. This has been a pretty exciting day as a result.

Schedule

Tomorrow, Thursday, the Sub-Commission will continue voting on draft decisions and resolutions. Friday will be the last day of the session.
