Today our turn finally came up under item 5 of the agenda to present the speech we had worked on concerning the violence against Muslims in Gujarat, India. Penny Parker gave the speech, a copy of which is included on the speeches page of this website. Pax Romana, another NGO, also mentioned Gujarat as part of their speech under item 5. We've included a copy of their statement here.
The Government of India asked for a copy of the speech and of course we were happy to provide them one. Later in the day they incorporated some responses to our speech in their general statement under item 5. We've included a copy of the remarks relating to the Minnesota Advocates' statement here.
The Sub-Commission finished the remainder of item 5 today, including more glowing comments on David Weissbrodt's final report on non-citizens, as well as some very good studies and papers on minorities, indigenous peoples, and caste discrimination.
Tomorrow the voting will begin. We've added some information on the draft resolutions that will be voted on at the voting page of this site. Voting will probably continue on Thursday, and possibly part of Friday.
A new exhibit went up today in the great center hall of the UN building on human rights in Latvia. We snapped a few photos.
