Day 9: Hot temperatures continue in Geneva, 7 August 2003

Garden & globe

Temperatures climbed to 100 degrees today (35 Celsius), as Geneva continues to experience a serious heat wave. Since most of the buildings, restaurants, busses and houses in Geneva don't have air conditioning (because they normally don't need it), it has been quite a challenge trying to stay cool.

The UN meeting rooms where the Sub-Commission meets are thankfully air conditioned, but many of the corridors, libraries, lounges and snack areas of the UN buildings are not air conditioned.

Other developments

Manpreet's speech yesterday was included in the UN press release. We also have scheduled on Friday a meeting with the representatives of the Peruvian government concerning the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Report.

Some organizations who could not stay to the end of the week have asked us to present their speeches under item 4, economic, social and cultural rights. Andy and Hyder will probably be making these speeches Friday or Monday.

Schedule

Tomorrow the Sub-Commission will continue discussions under Item 4 of the agenda. We continue to be a little behind schedule, so the length of some speeches have been shortened. It looks like our item 5 speech, on Gujarat, India, will be presented Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. Next week will be the final week of the Sub-Commission session
