Day 5: Happy Swiss Confederation day! (1 August 2003)

Geneva Fountain Flags & chess

As mentioned earlier, August 1st is an official holiday in Switzerland, commemorating the original combining of the Swiss cantons into a confederation over 600 years ago (1296).

It was a little difficult to take pictures in the evening when the main ceremonial events occur, but here are some photos taken during the day, of the flags, spitting fountains, public chess games, and kiddie carnival events.

The next business day for the Sub-Commission will be Monday, when the Sub-commission will continue to discuss item 6 on the agenda, pertaining to terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, small arms and light weapons, and other specific human rights issues that the Sub-commission has taken up. This item 6 is usually the last item to be discussed, but since the session schedule always seems to get behind toward the end, item 6 often gets very short attention. The Sub-Commission has decided this year to experiment with moving item 6 up (which will probably mean item 5, on discrimination, will now be the "caboose" that gets inadequate attention).
